What is CIO Association

The CIO Association is registered in Mumbai under the Maharashtra Public Trusts Act 1950. It owns and operates the “CIO Association”. 

Established in the year 2008, it is one of India’s largest and most active communities of Chief Information Officers from across the nation and has senior technology leaders as members, hence it is proudly stated that we are managed by CIOs, for CIOs. 

From its inception it has been working with the objective of enabling peer-to- peer knowledge sharing, strengthening leadership capability, and collectively exploring technology and business solutions through the shared experience of seasoned CIOs and IT leaders.

What are the objectives of CIO Association?
The CIO Association exists to help and assist CIOs to make quick, improved and more informed decisions through peer collaboration. Its key objectives includes but is not limited to:
a)Sharing peer knowledge and experiences
This includes Practical playbooks, candid lessons, and real-world insights from fellow CIOs. 
b)Learning from real-world use cases
The Association encourages live demonstrations with respect to technology aspects, reference architectures, and disseminates proven solutions that are working today across industries. 
c)Enabling Quicker, Improved and Informed decision-making
The Association encourages and promotes trusted word-of-mouth, benchmarks, and peer-recommended, de-risked vendor choices.
d)Showcasing and co-creating innovative aspects
The Association provides a neutral platform where technology companies and CIOs can collaborate to explore and co-create innovative solutions.

Who is eligible to become a member of the CIO Association?

Membership is strictly limited to senior technology leaders and officers responsible for overall IT strategy and governance within their organizations, as elaborated in the Association’s Membership Document.

Eligible roles include (titles may vary by organization): 

  • CIO (Chief Information Officer)
  • CISO (Chief Information Security Officer)
  • CTO (Chief Technology Officer)
  • CDO (Chief Digital Officer)

What is the Code of Conduct of Members?
Code of Conduct for Members – Key Principles 
The Code of Conduct of the CIO Association establishes high standards of professional ethics, integrity, and responsibility. Its key principles are:

a)Members shall promote professional education and best practices in governance, security, audit, and risk management. 
b)Members must treat fellow members with courtesy, fairness, and respect for intellectual property and confidentiality. 
c)No member shall engage in discriminatory, harmful, or unethical conduct. 
d)Members shall use information technology for social and economic good and act as responsible corporate citizens. 
e)Financial transparency and accountability are mandatory.

What are the benefits of becoming a member?
Members of the CIO Association receive: 

  • Invitations and updates for all CIO Association–organised forums and events across the cities
  • Opportunities to participate as speakers or panelists at Association and partner events
  • Invitations to select social and family-inclusive events (at least once annually)
  • Access to curated knowledge assets and content hosted on the CIO Association website
How can I apply for membership?
You can apply for membership by: 
All applications are subject to the review conducted to determine the fulfilment of the eligibility criteria before approval.
What is the membership fee?
  • Membership is valid for one year and subject to annual renewal
  • The annual membership is a non-refundable fee of INR 1,200
  • Membership runs from 1 April to 31 March
  • Renewals are expected in the first week of April each year 
A receipt is issued upon successful payment
Can I retain my membership after a job or role change?
a)Yes. Membership can be retained if eligibility criteria continue to be satisfied. 
b)Renewal is permitted under the applicable membership category. 
c)If the new role affects eligibility, membership type may be changed or cancelled.​ 
d)Membership may cease if the new role violates eligibility conditions.​ 
e)Consulting or sales roles may disqualify Professional Membership.​ 
f)The Governing Body/Chapter Committee reviews and decides the final status.​ 
g)Members must inform the Association of role changes.

What are the responsibilities of a CIO Association member?

a)To uphold professional ethics, integrity, and transparency. 
b)To promote knowledge sharing and best practices in IT and security. 
c)To maintain confidentiality of sensitive information. 
d)To respect intellectual property and professional boundaries. 
e)To avoid discrimination, misconduct, or unethical behaviour.

Is lifetime membership available?

At present, the CIO Association does not offer lifetime membership.

What happens if I change professions during my membership?
a)Membership remains valid only if eligibility criteria continue to be satisfied. 
b)The Governing Body/Chapter Committee can review member eligibility. 
c)Membership may be continued, converted, or ceased accordingly. 
d)The member must formally inform the Association regarding any change in the profession. 
e)The final decision rests with the Governing Body.

Can the membership be terminated?
Yes. Membership may be terminated under the following circumstances: 
a)Violation of the Code of Conduct 
b)Misrepresentation or incorrect declaration during membership 
c)Non-payment of membership fees 
d)Serious governance or financial misconduct by office bearers, following due enquiry 
e)Other circumstances as may be prescribed by the Association

I am not a CIO. Can I become a member?

No. Membership is exclusively reserved for CIOs and top-most IT decision makers or executives. 

I am a technology vendor or service provider. Can I join?

No. Vendors and IT service providers cannot become members. 

How is the CIO Association governed?

a) The Association is governed by the Governing Body and Chapter Committees. 
b) Governing Body members are elected through a formal election process. 
c) The Governing Body oversees policy, administration, finance, and compliance. 
d) Chapter Committees manage chapter-level operations under the supervision and control of the Governing Body.

Who forms the Governing Body and how are members appointed?

Members of the Governing Body are selected through an election process. Governing Body members serve for defined tenures and are expected to uphold the highest standards of integrity and accountability. 

Is the CIO Association pan-India?

Yes. The CIO Association is a pan-India organization, with members across major metros and emerging technology hubs. While the Association operates under a unified national charter, it actively supports state & city chapters to enable localized engagement and relevance.

How is CIO members’ data protected and used?
The CIO Association treats members’ data as strictly confidential. Member information is: 
  • Used only for Association communications, event participation, and community engagement
  • Never sold or shared with third parties without explicit consent 
Access to member data is restricted to authorized Association personnel only and there are several internal safeguards placed to protect the members’ data.
What is the grievance redressal mechanism?
The CIO Association is committed to fair and transparent grievance handling. For any concerns related to:
  • Member conduct
  • Policy violations
  • Disputes or ethical issues 
There is an existing grievance redressal mechanism approved by the Governing Body of the CIO -A. Apart from the availing existing grievance redressal, the Members may write confidentially to the greviance@thecioassociation.com. All grievances are reviewed objectively, with due process, discretion, and confidentiality.
